North Stars look for quick bounce back in Flin Flon

Coming off a 5-3 defeat in the opening game of their rivalry weekend with the Flin Flon Bombers, the Battlefords North Stars will get a second crack at their perennial foes on night two of the teams’ back-to-back at the Whitney Forum.

The North Stars enter play Saturday first in the Nutrien Division and second overall in the SJHL standings with a 32-10-4 record through 46 games. With just 10 to go on their regular season schedule, the team will be looking to close their season series with Flin Flon with a win (0-2-1 through the first three games).

The Bombers are the lone team ahead of the Battlefords in the league standings, sitting first in the Sherwood Division and first overall with a 40-3-2 record through 45 games. With nine wins in their last 10, the Bombers will be searching for a third straight and a season series sweep.

The North Stars saw three different players from two forward lines and the defense chip in with goals Friday, as each of Jordan Grill, Brad Blake, and Hunter Burgeson got on the board to battle back from a 2-1 deficit at the end of the first, and 3-2 deficit at the end of the second, to tie things up late in the third before the eventual game-winner and insurance marker by the Bombers in the final minutes.

At the other end, Flin Flon’s big guns led the way as Carter Anderson (two goals, one assist), Justin Lies (one goal, one assist), Jacob Vockler (one goal, one assist), and Alexi Sylvestre (one goal, one assist) each pitched in multi-point efforts.

Special teams did end up playing a vital factor in Friday’s result, as Sylvestre’s shorthanded goal would prove the game winner, after Anderson’s power play marker put Flin Flon in front for much of the second.

In goal, both teams will see a different goalie get the nod on night two of the back-to-back. The North Stars will turn to Logan Cunningham, while the Bombers go with Kenneth Marquart. Cunningham is 9-1-0 this season with a 2.71 goals against average and .910 save percentage. Marquart is 14-0-1 with a 1.59 goals against average and .947 save percentage.

Saturday’s NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB, with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
