Curling portion of SSFA 55+ Games to begin Monday

Mar 3, 2024 | 8:00 AM

Over 70 people from across Saskatchewan will take to North Battleford’s Northland Power Curling Centre early next week to compete in the curling portion of the Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association (SSFA) 55+ Games.

While the majority of the games will be hosted in North Battleford this summer, the curling events will be this week, while the ice remains in the local rink.

Al Gabert, President of Twin Rivers Curling Club and chair of the local organizing committee, said it’s an event the community is looking forward to hosting, for just the second time and first since 2016.

“I think we’ve got about 72 people registered, from [ages] 55 to about in their 80s with 30 or so from town and the rest from out of town, as far as Regina, Saskatoon, P.A. and out that way,” he said. “They’ll come in and do some curling Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and hopefully the weather’s not too bad. We’re just looking forward to a good week.”

Registration will open Monday at 11 a.m. with the first draw at 1 p.m., and Opening Ceremonies to then conclude the day at 5 p.m. The action will resume Tuesday with draws at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., followed by a banquet for the participants at 6:30 p.m. The start of the playoff rounds will happen on Wednesday, with draws going at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Due to the number of participants across the various age groups, from Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed 55+ and 65+, as well as a couple of teams of 75+ participants, and stick curling for those with more limited mobility, all draws until the playoff rounds will likely be a full six sheets of action.

Following the results of the playoffs, there will be awards to close out the curling portion of the Games, with the winners in each category earning an opportunity to advance to compete at the national 55+ Senior Games this summer in Quebec City.

The SSFA 55+ Games will return to the Battlefords for the remainder of the events, including pickleball, softball, golf, bowling, track and field, and more from June 11-13.
