Prairie North Co-op Community Conversations coming to Kelvington, Melfort, Spalding

Mar 11, 2024 | 2:57 PM

Prairie North Co-op is hosting three community meetings this week in an effort to hear from members.

Co-op Community Conversations will take place at the Kelvington Legion Hall Monday night, the Canalta Hotel in Melfort on Wednesday, and the Spalding Community Hall on Thursday.

All meetings begin at 7 p.m.

General Manager Terry Tremblay told northeastNOW it’s the third year for the Community Conversations. He said they’ve never interacted more with their customers through social media and their website, but they want to meet with members in-person.

“The board felt there is still a role where that is valuable,” Tremblay said. “The challenge at Prairie North Co-op is we operate in six communities.”

Tremblay said they’ve held their Annual General Meeting in various communities in the past, but since COVID they have held their AGM virtually. These Community Conversations are meant to be held to hear what members have to say since AGM’s are now virtual.

The meeting will feature a 20-minute presentation from Tremblay about the latest developments and updates regarding Prairie North Co-op. Prairie North representatives will then stick around to talk to members and answer any questions, whether about the organization in general or about their specific community’s Co-op.

According to Tremblay, past meetings of this nature have featured smaller crowds, but the intimate atmosphere allows him to have more one-on-one discussions and specific conversations.

“If there’s not that many people… we’ll have a 15-minute conversation on one topic that’s important to one member,” Tremblay explained. “That’s something you can’t have on Facebook or at a virtual Annual General Meeting.”

He said Prairie North should be able to hold three meetings per year, then alternate to the other three communities under the Prairie North fold. Specific issues that will likely be discussed include the repairs to the gas station in Kelvington after a plough wind a couple of years ago. Melfort features a new foods store and a new liquor store.

The meetings will focus on the positive developments for Prairie North Co-op recently, as well as challenges like the cost of expansion and rising interest costs.
