A pair of four-legged friends are lucky to be alive thanks to the quick action of the Nipawin Fire Department (NFD).

They were called to a shop fire last Wednesday night in the Rural Municipality (RM) of Torch River.

The shop was fully engulfed in flames, and a witness told crews there were dogs trapped in an attached fenced area.

Crews cut the fence with an angle grinder and the dogs were freed, but due to their injuries they ran off.

Fire crews continued to battle the blaze while volunteers, neighbours, and the RCMP searched for the dogs.

One eventually returned to the scene, and the other was located by officers down the road.

The two dogs were taken to the vet and according to the NFD are healing up fine.

It was a busy week for the department as they did a lift assist with North East EMS on Thursday afternoon, fought a vehicle fire south of White Fox Friday night, and put out a tree fire in Pontrilas Saturday night.
