Honour our Veterans banner program approved for North Battleford

Mar 27, 2024 | 10:00 AM

North Battleford City Council have approved the annual Honour Our Veterans banner program.

The city agreed to install veterans’ banners on up to 20 light standards each season on the 1100 to 1300 blocks of 100 Street in North Battleford from mid-October to mid-November, in honour of Canada’s veterans.

The banners will be double-sided, so four veterans’ pictures, or two banners, can be displayed on each light standard.

North Battleford Royal Canadian Legion Branch 70 continues to provide the Honour Our Veterans banner program in North Battleford that’s now in its fifth year.

The program is an awareness campaign the Legion runs annually around Remembrance Day. City Parks staff install and remove the banners for the Legion, Parks & Recreation Director, Cheryl DeNeire, said in her report to council.

While she noted the project of erecting and then taking down the veterans’ banners is labour intensive for city staff, especially since crews will have to hang 100 lighted Christmas banners right afterwards, the amount of light standards for the veterans’ project is acceptable to both the Legion and the city’s parks department.

City administration said the agreement between the city and Legion will continue each year while the veterans’ banner program runs.

Sponsor a banner

The Legion in North Battleford said people are invited to sponsor a veteran’s banner for this year. Branch 70 will accept applications now through Aug. 31. A maximum of 40 applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis this year.

“It’s such a valuable program,” Legion secretary Louise Oster told battlefordsNOW. “It’s one way to honour our veterans for all they have done for our country. The families love to see [the banners]. I’ve had compliments from everybody. They like to see the banners up on the light standards.”
