NCHCF to receive $10K from Melfort’s 100 Women Who Care

A local charity is $10,000 richer thanks to the “100 Women Who Care” in Melfort.

The organization heard presentations from three non-profit organizations at a gathering at the Melfort Golf and Country Club Tuesday night.

In the end, it was the North Central Health Care Foundation (NCHCF) that was selected to receive the money, that will go toward the Melfort Hospital Oncology Department.

Representatives from Melfort Youth Evolution and the Silver Park Hall also made presentations to the 100 Women Who Care.

NCHCF Chair Peggy George said they were very excited to be chosen.

“That was the biggest, fastest fundraiser we have ever held,” George said. “Still kind of blown away just thinking about it.”

She said it has yet to be determined specifically where the money will be allocated.

“We do have a couple of things that Oncology has asked for but there’s a whole process to go through yet,” explained George.

The NCHCF presentation at Tuesday’s meeting was about COPS – Community Oncology Programs in Saskatchewan. COPS in Melfort started as one of four pilot projects in the province in 1996, and has expanded to seven treatment bedrooms and televisions, and a common area. Up to 12 patients can be treated at once.

“It’s wonderful that it has been able to grow,” George said.

She added it was wonderful that the three charities were able to get exposure at the 100 Women Who Care event.

“There (were) people there that didn’t even know there was an oncology program in Melfort,” George explained. She said the event helped spread the word about what they do, and what their needs are going forward.

The 100 Women Who Care chapter in Melfort had 100 women raise $100 each for a worthy local charity.

She said 100 Women Who Care is a wonderful program.

“I’m so thrilled for the people that have brought this to Melfort and for all of the women who have stepped up and climbed on board and are willing to support this program,” said George.
