Raiders win second straight WHL Draft Lottery, will pick second overall

The Prince Albert Raiders received some exciting news ahead of their playoff opener on Thursday night in Saskatoon.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Western Hockey League (WHL) held their annual Prospects Draft Lottery which saw the Raiders win it for the second straight year only this time, P.A. won’t be picking first.

Entering the Draft Lottery, Prince Albert’s pick, originally from Seattle, had the fourth-best odds to win but because of the Draft Lottery rules, the Raiders could only move up to second overall as the rules state that teams can only move up a maximum of two spots.

P.A. have drafted second overall just one other time in franchise history, coming last year when the club had not only the second pick but first and seventh overall as well. They used those picks to draft Daxon Rudolph (#1), Riley Boychuk (#2), and Ty Meunier (#7).

The Raiders acquired the pick from Seattle in a trade last season that saw Prince Albert deal defenceman Nolan Allan and prospect Reese Shaw to the Thunderbirds for a massive haul that included three players and six draft picks.

The 2024 WHL U.S. Priority Draft will be held on Wednesday, May 8, and the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft will be held a day later on Thursday, May 9.
