Vikings Senior Boys team ends season on a high note in Moose Jaw

One High School basketball team from North Battleford was happy to participate in the provincial basketball championships even though it was just for one game.

After HOOPLA was cancelled due to teacher sanctions, all teams who qualified were invited by the High Schools Athletics Association for a one-day tournament to wrap up the season.

One of those teams was the Senior Boys Vikings from North Battleford Comprehensive High School. Despite winning the regional tournament, the boys’ team had to play in the 5/6 consolation game which was won on a last-second three-pointer in overtime against Regina Campbell.

“The fact that we got to play another game was huge,” said coach Ryler Woiden. “They were just so pumped to get down there.”

Although it wasn’t the true HOOPLA experience, Woiden said the team still treated it as a major event and even had the support of the school community.

“There was a ton of support, and a ton of people came out, so all the games were packed in the stands and still having everybody, all the teams drive out and play, it was still pretty special for them.”

Looking back on the season, Woiden called it a successful year playing at the 5A level and going up against teams in Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert.

Beating Regina Campbell in the consolation game was a big moment for Woiden and the team, noting that North Battleford Comprehensive High School has about 1,000 fewer students than Regina Campbell.

With the season done and wrapped up, Woiden is already looking forward to next year as some returning players will be guaranteed to make a big impact on the court.
