Mustangs face more adversity, come through in the clutch to earn 3-1 series lead

The Melfort Mustangs flipped the script on Wednesday night against the Estevan Bruins, as they earned it the hard way to pick up a 3-1 series lead heading home.

After a disappointing collapse on Tuesday, the Mustangs found themselves in a similar situation, with a 2-0 lead halfway through the game.

Estevan did exactly what they did in Game 3, scoring a couple in just a few minutes and tying it up as the game headed to the final period.

Melfort built on the prior night’s experience, settling themselves down in the intermission, and then taking it to the Bruins when it mattered most, eventually pulling away with a 5-2 Game 4 victory.

“Talking about redemption, responding and energy, that was that and it was good on the boys for responding, they worked hard all throughout the night and I’m proud of them,” said assistant coach, Tye Scherger.

“Our second period, it was the same as yesterday, penalties hurt us, we had a lead, and they tied it up. We talked on the bench and in the dressing room though, about controlling our emotions, staying with it, fighting through adversity, and that’s exactly what the boys did in the third.”

With the win, the Stangs are just one win away from advancing to the second round, joining the Flin Flon Bombers and Battlefords North Stars who swept their series on Wednesday.

Game 5 is at the Northern Lights Palace, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and Scherger has a message for the community.

“First off, get up Melfort, pack the Palace, the boys are gonna need you and they’re gonna need the noise,” he added.

“Going back home up three to one, it’s awesome, we have all the momentum right now, and if we come out buzzing on Friday with a lot of energy, then we should be good.”
