Mustangs storm back late, take 2-0 series lead over Broncos

The Melfort Mustangs are now 5 and 0 at home, as they pulled off a third-period comeback to take Game 2, 4-3.

After two periods, the Mustangs were trailing by two goals for the first time all postseason, as Humboldt held a 3-1 lead.

Melfort scored three straight in the third, including two from Ryan Duguay for the second straight night, as they now take a 2-0 series lead.

“Our start wasn’t the best again, but nothing you can do, we battled back, especially being down coming into the third, the boys had fight, they had grit, and they were warriors in there and we got it done, so being up 2-0 heading to Humboldt, you couldn’t ask for anything better,” explained assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“The biggest we had in the third was that jam, that heaviness and that grit, you need that for a full 60 and the first half we didn’t have it all, but in that second half we dominated the physicality and it sure paid off.”

Chase Friedt-Mohr also had a pair of goals on the evening, as he and Duguay lifted the group over the top.

For Scherger and this Stangs team, it sure feels nice to have two of their best feeling it, at the right time.

“Duguay has got the most accurate shot, it’s crazy and good for him. He is so dialled in when he has that puck in on the goalie, so very proud of him and glad he’s performing,” he added.

“Freedo probably has one of the hardest shots and it shows, clapper from the point, it’s tough for a goalie to see and it’s awesome because he got two tonight also.”

James Venne stopped 36 of 39 shots he faced, while Benjamin Motew allowed four goals on 41 shots.

Games 3 & 4 will be on Tuesday and Wednesday from the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt.
