Fresh off a finals appearance with the Notre Dame Hounds, Prince Albert’s Sasha Malenfant now knows what the next step in her hockey career looks like.

The 18-year-old forward has committed to MacEwan University in Edmonton and will compete in Canada West next season.

“Earlier this year I talked to MacEwan at a tournament, and then just kind of followed along, went for a tour in December and then signed a few days later. Pretty exciting, pretty big moment for me,” said Malenfant.

Malenfant said the relative proximity to Prince Albert was one of the reasons she chose MacEwan.

“It’s the northern part of Alberta so it’s a bit closer to home,” she said. “Talked to the coach a little bit and he’s really working on the culture of their team and how he wants to display a dressing room vibe and atmosphere for other newcomers as well.”

“The MacEwan women’s hockey program has a bright future ahead from what I’ve heard so I’m happy to be a part of the building of it.”

Malenfant just wrapped up her AAA U18 career as the Hounds lost to the Regina Rebels in the league final.

“We were underdogs in the playoffs, beat out the second-best team and then went to the finals, so pretty good,” she said.

Malenfant added that she’s looking forward to what will be a challenging next chapter in her hockey journey.

“Just hoping to be able to fit in eventually, going into a pretty tough division there,” she said. “Canada West is one of the most competitive and rough divisions, so hopefully just improve that way.”

“And university is going to be different so I’m excited to get that started and meet new people.”

Malenfant said she’ll be doing a Bachelor of Arts degree before pursuing social work.
