Broncos capitalize in triple overtime after high-sticking penalty

Apr 10, 2024 | 12:14 PM

The Melfort Mustangs and Humboldt Broncos did nearly two full games Tuesday night in a wild Game 3, which needed triple overtime to decide a winner.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, it seemed all for nothing, as a high-sticking call ultimately lost them the game.

“You can thank the ref for that one, you can’t make that call, when it’s the third overtime you just put the whistle away. Absolute brutal reffing and we’ll come back ready to go hard,” said assistant coach, Tye Scherger.

“Our team is fired up right now, and they’re unhappy, so I know they’re gonna come out hard in Game 4.”

Melfort now needs to regroup quickly, as once Game 3 ended, it was less than 20 hours away that they’d be right back on the same ice surface, trying to avoid a 2-2 series tie.

Both teams will also need to rest quickly, as only three forward lines were run by each team during the overtime periods, while the two goalies faced a combined 133 shots.

“You have to get a good meal in with lots of hydration and rest, have a good mindset, put this in the past and have a new outlook ready to go for Game 4,” Scherger added.

“I’d say the top two goalies in our league without a doubt, those guys are dialled in the whole game, they didn’t seem fatigued at all, so good on them.”

The Broncos scored eight seconds after the high stick, making them 1 for 8 on the powerplay on the evening. The game concluded at the 108:21 minute mark.

Game time is again at 7:30 p.m. from the Elgar Petersen Arena, with the Suncrest College pregame show at 7:15 p.m.
