Melfort’s new fire chief urges safety amidst dry conditions

The new chief of the Melfort Fire Department is excited to start his new position.

Leonard Whitney is an 18-year veteran of the department. After starting as a recruit, he worked his way up to Lieutenant, up to Captain, and now to Fire Chief/Emergent Management Coordinator as of Apr. 1.

“Kinda worked my way from the bottom to the top,” Whitney told northeastNOW.

He said volunteer departments are always looking to recruit new members.

“Part of our mandate is to ensure we have enough members to answer the call when it comes in, and so we’re always looking for people that are interested,” said Whitney. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter with the Melfort department can contact City Hall.

Whitney said his mandate is also to ensure the members have proper gear and equipment.

His time as chief comes as the area is enduring dry conditions after a winter with little snow. Whitney said everyone must remain vigilant with fire safety.

“It is very, very dry out there,” Whitney said. “We’ve seen some active fires in the province already this year.” He said there may be some conditions that could lead to the enforcement of fire bans in the future.

Anyone lighting controlled fires should ensure they have a fireguard in place.

“If you’re burning out in the country, make sure you phone the control burn number to make sure that we don’t get called out there accidentally,” said Whitney.

He advised everyone to be cautious when dealing with the dry conditions, as it wouldn’t take much to start a blaze. Something as small as an improperly disposed cigarette could lead to a lot of damage and unnecessary work for fire crews.

“We definitely see some calls like that through the season even when it’s not as dry as it is this year.”
