Mustangs with opportunity to close, advance to finals, on home ice

Apr 13, 2024 | 4:40 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are one win away from the SJHL Finals.

After Rhett Hamilton’s overtime winner in Game 4, the Mustangs captured a 3-1 series lead and now have the opportunity to close on their home ice.

“We’re pretty pumped up, got ready to go in practice this week, so just with the preparation and everything, we have to be ready to go tonight… we watched the goal on video again, which was pretty exciting, so we’re all pretty pumped,” Hamilton told northeastNOW.

“After that big win, we’re all just still so excited about getting it, so we’re gonna try and carry that momentum into tonight… it’s gonna be crazy in the building, I know the fans are just so excited, it’s already been a great home atmosphere this postseason, but tonight is gonna be the biggest one of the season so far, for sure.”

Melfort had this exact same opportunity in Round 1, as they split on the road in Estevan to take a 3-1 series lead over the Bruins.

The Stangs were able to take Game 5 in that situation, and are now trying to do the same against another opponent in the Humboldt Broncos, who are fighting for their playoff lives.

“We know they’re gonna come out hard, so we have to come out super heavy,” added Hamilton. “Right out of the gates, just be as hard as we possibly can, be fast and make good plays. It’s a big game tonight and we can put these guys to bed, so we’re going to do everything we can.”

The Blue and Green are 5 and 0 at the Northern Lights Palace through the first two rounds, as they hope to meet a team in the Finals, the Flin Flon Bombers, who are currently a perfect 8 and 0 everywhere.

Will high-glove be the key, as that’s where Benjamin Motew suffered all four in Game 4… according to Hamiton, it’s wait and see.

“We’ll have to see I guess, whatever’s open.”

Puck drop goes at 7:30 p.m. on 105 CJVR.
