Saskatchewan Health Authority Youth-in-Action Volunteers Celebrate
Participants of the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s (SHA) Prince Albert Youth-In-Action program at Herb Bassett Home and Victoria Hospital celebrated the year's successes during a wind-up event on May 29, 2025. More than 3,170 volunteer hours were amassed by 81 Prince Albert youth in the program, with 10 Grade 12 students receiving bursaries. Bursary recipients describe their experiences as inspiring personal growth by connecting with people of all backgrounds and ages, gaining empathy and compassion, building leadership skills, improving confidence and learning about themselves.   “We are incredibly proud that the Youth-in-Action program is so well-received in our community – by residents, patients and youth – and all in collaboration with SHA staff,” said Janelle Senga, Manager for Volunteer Services for the SHA. “We are grateful for the youth who donate their time to helping others.”  Senga also praised the time and effort put in by SHA Volunteer Coordinators Charlene Bernard and Lindsey Chisholm, who ran the program Monday through Thursday after school from November to May. Youth volunteers also appreciated Bernard and Chisholm’s guidance about health care, compassion and leadership.  Described by a participant as, “…no ordinary extracurricular (activity),” the Youth-in-Action program offers youth ages 14 to 18 the opportunity to volunteer two hours a week, for seven months of the year supporting staff, patients and residents. They perform tasks in the hospital such as delivering water to patients, putting together paperwork packages for nursing staff, sterilizing toys, visiting pediatric patients, as well as supporting recreational activities in continuing care programming at Herb Bassett Home. The 10 Grade 12 students entering post-secondary programming next year who received bursaries are: Jonathan Berger, Gwen Edades, Jessica Nye, and Maryam Zafar who received the 2024-25 Hannah and Hudson Bursaries, donated by Bev and the late Joe Remai; and  Ikram Awosiyan, Nelly Charles-Okoli, Umer Hashim, Selena Markos, Sadie McFarlane, and Anna Songolo who received the Youth-in-Action bursaries, donated by the former Victoria Hospital Health Care Auxiliary. Recruitment for the 2025-2026 program will begin in the fall. Anyone interested in learning more about the Youth-in-Action program should contact the Saskatchewan Health Authority Volunteer Services Department at 306-765-6119 or volunteers@paphr.sk.ca.
