A pair of Prince Albert area football players are basking in championship glory after winning the World Bowl American Football Championship in Germany earlier this month.

Both Robby Everest and Layne Vandale were members of the Saskatchewan Selects, representing Canada at the tournament. The U14 Selects beat Netherlands 21-0 in the final.

“So far it’s the biggest milestone in my football career, said Vandale, who plays receiver and running back. “It’s pretty cool that we were able to go down and represent Canada.”

Everest added it was a significant win for the country.

“I find it very important because winning something down there makes Canada look good on the big stage,” he said.

The championship also included teams from Denmark, Israel, Mexico, the United States, and the host Germany. It was played under American football rules.

“That made it more versatile so we could have other countries,” said Everest, a defensive back. “It was confusing at first but I got the hang of it after a bit.”

Both Everest and Vandale played for the P.A. River Riders prior to joining the Selects. They’ll both be attending Carlton High School this fall to play for the Crusaders.
