Red Wing blaze prompts fire ban

Apr 15, 2024 | 4:32 PM

The RM of Prince Albert issued a fireban on April 15, citing a high volume of fire calls and a significant fire in the RM of Buckland earlier in the morning.

The fire ban is effective immediately, meaning all permits are suspended and people are not allowed to light fires outdoors at all.

Use of fireworks is also illegal until the ban is lifted.

The fire this morning was near Highway 2 and the Red Wing Road. Crews contained the brush fire quickly but with trees and grass not yet green, the risk rapid fire spread is still elevated.

According to the Sask. Public Safety Agency’s website, a wildfire named the Birch Fire is burning southwest of MacDowall and another is burning north of Nipawin. Both are in the Prince Albert wildfire management area.

Fortunately, a large amount of rain is expected in the area in the next several days, starting Tuesday.

With green up still not here yet, grass fires, such as this one next to the viaduct in Prince Albert around 4:30 pm start very easily.
