Series heads to Game 7 after Mustangs fall to Broncos in double OT

Apr 15, 2024 | 6:00 AM

For the second night in a row, the Melfort Mustangs failed to put away the Humboldt Broncos and end their season, as a winner-take-all in Game 7 on Tuesday is now needed to decide who will face the Flin Flon Bombers in this year’s SJHL Finals.

Despite Melfort dominating all of the extra frame activities, Benjamin Motew made 56 saves and Spencer Bell was the overtime hero just 24 hours after his hat trick performance in Game 5, as Humboldt took Game 6, 4-3 in double OT over the Mustangs.

It was a fourth consecutive game for the Broncos where they trailed in the third period, but two late goals, including one with the net, pulled at the 47-second mark, tied the game, sending it to double overtime.

“We just have to play smart if we want to close, picking up guys on the back check and picking up guys in our zone, just as simple as that. The biggest thing is that on three of their goals, we didn’t pick them up coming back, so obviously we have to address that,” explained assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“Every overtime in the playoffs I feel like we dominated, but it’s just a thing of burying the puck in the net, you have to bury it every chance you get and be hard on it. We got to go now though, game seven is on Tuesday, and we got to jump right back out there and go to work.”

Game 7 will go at 7:30 p.m. from the Northern Lights Palace and can be heard on 105 CJVR, with the Suncrest College pregame show beginning at 7:15 p.m., as Ben Tompkins has the call.
