Mustangs down to last life as Game 7 looms Tuesday night

Apr 16, 2024 | 1:13 PM

For the first time these playoffs, the Melfort Mustangs must win their next game, if they wish to extend their season.

After taking a 3-1 series lead over the Humboldt Broncos, the Mustangs have lost back-to-back games for the first time this postseason, as it now all comes down to a Game 7 to see who will join the Flin Flon Bombers in this year’s SJHL Finals.

It’s been a bit of tough sledding for Melfort in the past two games when it comes to finding the pack of the net, as they’ve only scored five times on 102 shots.

Broncos netminder Benjamin Motew has been fantastic, but according to assistant coach Tye Scherger, there have been plenty of rebounds for the taking and the Stangs must capitalize.

“We just have to get hungrier in front of the net, there are a lot of rebounds that are sitting in the crease, so we have to be hard right in front of the net and jam pucks in,” he told northeastNOW.

Another issue for the Blue and Green has been giving up leads in the third period.

In the last four games, in which they’ve only won once, they’ve held a 2-1 lead on two separate occasions, as well as a 3-2 lead and a 3-1 lead over Humboldt.

Three of those games have also gone to overtime, with only one falling their way.

That all has to be in the past though, as dwelling on it will only make Tuesday night that much more difficult.

With trust in all four lines, as well as the hopeful return of Chase Friedt-Mohr, the Mustangs have to put it all on the line, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Melfort.

“There’s a good chance Freedo will be back… but it’s awesome to have trust in all four lines, everyone understands it,” Scherger added. “We have to play a perfect game, that’s all there is to it, play simple, hard, smart, and get ready to go to work.”

Game 7 can be heard on 105 CJVR, with the Suncrest College pregame show starting at 7:15 p.m.
