Travis Jean, 34, is charged with first-degree murder and arson – disregard for human life.

Jean appeared in court in shackles, with his hair tied back in a top knot.

Judge Kevin Hill is presiding in the hearing, with prosecutors Jennifer Schmidt and Brynn Achtymichuk representing the Crown, and James Struthers the defence.

A publication ban is in effect on any evidence presented at the preliminary hearing.

The purpose of the hearing is to determine if there is enough evidence to be able to proceed to trial.
