Battleford Community Spirit Group needs members to stay open

Have a drive to help bring people together? The Battleford Community Spirit Group wants you.

“They follow their motto which is ‘Building a better community together,’” said President Kelly Halstead.

She explained it was a friend of hers that brought her into the group last year when she first moved to the town.

“I had never actually heard of this group before,” said Halstead, noting her friend had been running for president.

When her friend moved out of town, Halstead – who had been serving as vice-president – made the leap to the top spot on the committee.

“I quickly learned that they were a fantastic group of people,” she said.

The group’s aim is to support the town by hosting free events for families and residents to come together and share.

“Just so people can have fun and get to know each other,” she said.

The group is made up of five members and needs more to join as their future is up in the air.

“We need a lot of hands on to run these events and when there’s so few of us, I mean it’s a lot of work for us to do on our own,” Halstead said.

Last year, the group held a street fair, Lights of Joy, a parade and a winter dance. This year, they plan on continuing with the events as scheduled but as for the following year, the group isn’t sure.

“We definitely need a new treasurer to come in, we definitely need more members at large to help us with the ideas, with the voting and then with the hands to help us put on these events,” she said.

The group is also looking for more volunteers to join them in their quest to bring civic joy to the town. To those residents interested in joining, the group will host its annual general meeting on Tuesday, April 23 and Halstead said that was a perfect time to come out.

“Come to our meeting, put their names in there, get nominated, get voted,” she said of the 7 p.m., at the Historic Battlefords Lions Club located at 162 22 Street.

“Even if they just want to come just to see what we’re about, hear the ideas of some of the things we want to do this year, what we did last year just to get a feel of what we are, then they’re more than welcome just to come and sit,” she said.

They also welcome people to visit their Facebook page and reach out to the members that way. While only Battleford residents can join the committee, people from other communities are welcome to volunteer with the group.

“To be able to have this group that can put on these events to get the community together,” she said, noting she moved from a large city where these groups are few if they exist at all.

“I mean it’s great to be able to know who’s around you and get to know people and make friends.”
