LLRIB departments host open house events

Two departments with the Lac La Ronge Indian Band teamed up to host open houses on Friday.

The Lands and Resources Department moved into a new space near Air Ronge’s Lac La Ronge Visitor Centre in November, and held a grand opening and barbecue to welcome the public. The department was formally located in the band’s central office and that space has since been taken over by justice, and prevention and recovery staff.

“We just wanted to invite the community to check out our new work space and have a barbecue and just have everyone over here to meet the team,” said Lands Manager Ty Roberts.

“People can come and buy trappers licenses here now. We deal with a lot of land users and trappers and they have to come in to pay for their leases, come in and get maps and stuff like that. It’s just easier for us to deal with them here in our space rather than having to come to the band office, check in with reception, get escorted upstairs and then come see us. It’s so busy at the band office with all of the other departments being there. It’s nice to be away and focus our attention on the members that need it. We’re happy to here.”

Roberts explained the new location has much more space and enough offices for all seven employees in the department. The space Lands and Resources are now occupying was the former office of Kitsaki Vegetation Services, which moved into a renovated and expanded building in La Ronge’s Industrial Park.

Roberts noted the department’s ultimate goal is to have a standalone, brand new, energy efficient building some day.

“We have been trying really hard the last couple of years to get our own space through grants,” he said.

“We applied for the Green and Inclusive Building Grant and we weren’t successful in getting it, but we are going to continue to apply for it. We are looking at building a Lands and Resources building in the future that will host the Lands and Resources Department, all of our equipment, a shop and we’re looking at hopefully having more archive space to store all of our land records and store history of the band.”

At the Community Energy Department next door to Lands and Resources, Manager Jason Cook-Studer said it made sense to team up and host an open house the same day. He added the event was originally scheduled for Earth Day.

“In our department, we want to show them the work we have done in terms of our community energy planning, our timeline on where we are at, some of the projects that we have available and people can sign up for some of our training opportunities we are looking at offering this summer in terms of solar training and energy auditing training,” Studer-Cook said.
