Mental Health forum coming to Saskatchewan Hospital

Apr 20, 2024 | 8:00 AM

Mental Health Week takes place in early May and to help raise awareness, Saskatchewan Hospital Legacy Trail and Canadian Mental Health and the Saskatchewan Hospital have partnered up to present a free Mental Health Learning Forum: A Historical Journey and Youth Mental Health.

“We just wanted to bring some awareness,” said Barb Lilly, member of the Legacy Trail committee.

“We have a couple of guest speakers that are coming,” she added of Dr. Erika Dyck from the University of Saskatchewan, Dr. Nathan Pyle and Social Worker Alan Corbeil.

While Dyck will speak on the history of mental health, Pyle and Corbeil will speak on influences, trends and resiliency in children’s mental health.

There will be two presentations on the day of May 8. The first in the afternoon will be for local community agencies while the evening will be for the public 6:45 to 9 p.m.

“We’re also going to have some hospital tours,” said Lilly.

She explained they also wanted to create a dialogue in the community.

“I think just breaking down the stigma, opening up some conversations, so that people realize that we’re all affected in some way or other by mental health either personally or with family members.”

Meanwhile, Lilly said she is looking forward to having the community groups and organizations come together for a common goal.

“[it] is to work together from human to human to see if there’s anything we can do to learn, to help each other.”

Mental Health Week runs from May 6 – 12. To get a spot on the tour, call the Saskatchewan Hospital at 306-440-4100.

Though it is a free event, donations are welcome.
