PAGC set to host largest Senator’s Cup tournament to date

Indigenous hockey teams from across the prairies are in Prince Albert this weekend for the eighth annual Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) Senator’s Cup.

The 2024 edition of the tournament will feature 19 teams competing for the grand prize, three more than last year when they had 16. This year will feature three teams from Manitoba, one from Alberta, and 15 from Saskatchewan, which includes the PBCN Stars who have won the tournament the last two years.

With more teams joining the party year after year, tournament organizer Robynn Dorion said it’s getting more fun to watch.

“It’s definitely one of the biggest, most exciting tournaments that Prince Albert Grand Council has,” she said.

With new teams in this year’s tournament, one thing will stay the same this year: The prize pool. The first-place finishers will take home the grand prize of a cool $30,000 while the second-place team will earn $15,000, third-place wins $10,000, and fourth-place wins $7,500.

Dorion said that although it’s the same prize pool, the level of competition will still be at its best.

“It’s going to bring more fans out and bring the hockey community together which will create a great atmosphere,” she said.

Games began early Friday morning, with the first game starting at 8:00 a.m. between the Keeseekoose Rangers and Cross Lake Selects.

Admission for the tournament is $10 with children under five years old and seniors over 65 getting in for free. Vendors will also be on-site with raffles and prizes to be won.

The tournament runs through Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the gold medal game set to start at 9:15 p.m. on Sunday. All games will be played at the Art Hauser Centre.
