Executive Committee meeting

Bus fare increase and ceremonial grounds for Friendship Centre on Monday agenda

Apr 28, 2024 | 8:00 AM

Prince Albert city council will have a few things to consider on Monday for their Executive Committee meeting, including an increase in bus fares.

Staff are proposing increases in several areas.

If approved, the fares would be $3/ride or $25/book of 10 tickets for all ages.

Adults would pay $80 for a monthly pass, seniors $30, post-secondary students $65, youth 14 – 18 would pay $55/month (a drop of 50 cents), a child under 14 would pay $25 and children under 10 would ride free with paid guardian.

The $20 monthly pass for high school students could also become a thing of the past. Staff suggested a different arrangement with both public and Catholic school divisions that would see a 10 per cent reduction.

Rates have not been increased since 2019 but the cost to operate the service has gone up by $750,000 in that same time frame.

Seniors would not be eligible until they are 64, five years old than they can get the senior pass now.

Council will also hear a presentation from Shane Bird at the Prince Albert Indian and Métis Friendship Centre. The Centre wants to see a ceremonial grounds created in the Little Red River park.

The proposed grounds would be used for things like rites of passage ceremonies, sundances, medicine and sweat lodges, horse danced along with gatherings that include pow wows, youth events and city and family events.

According to the proposal, the Friendship Centre is hoping to own, operate and maintain the grounds.

Council meets at 4:00 pm at City Hall.
