Students at the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Senator Myles Venne School (SMVS) collected 23 medals at the 31st annual Prince Albert Grand Council Fine Arts Festival.

That’s according to Kara Ross, who is an SMVS teacher and a fine arts representative at the school for more than 10 years. She explained the medal haul was a really good performance for students at SMVS.

“I think it is really important for us to give students the chance to showcase their talents and their culture and just give them that sense of ownership and that they belong and what they do is important,” Ross said.

The festival occurred April 22-25 at the Prince Albert Exhibition Grounds. It included more than 1,500 students from 26 schools amongst the Prince Albert Grand Council district.

Senator Myles Venne School students who won an award are Krista Roberts-McLean (first place, mixed medium art), Akena Nelson (second place, vocal solo), Cora Clarke (first place, woodwork), Katy Halkett (second place, sculpture), Jozie Halkett (first place, sculpture), Catherine Roberts (first place, reports), Cordell Cook (first place, essays) and Dino Cook-Bird (second place, essays).
