Early registration open for this year’s Melfort Multi-K

Spring has just arrived, but it’s never too early to think about an annual late-summer tradition in Melfort.

Registration is now open for the Melfort Multi-K being held Sept. 14.

Race Director Allison Rogers told northeastNOW that anyone interested can go to melfortmultik.ca to register in the free Castle Northland Building Supply 1K Fun Run for kids aged 10 and under, the 5K or 10K walk or run, or the 21.1K run.

She said the event will be very similar to years past, with the same route so no one gets turned around. There will be a slight change to the kids’ event; instead of a free t-shirt, kids will receive a special prize package thanks to Castle.

The event was created in 2011 by Dr. Richard Van Der Ross, who has since left the city. However, Rogers said his vision for the event is still intact in its 13th year.

“He felt like he needed to give some of his patients a goal, whether that was to run or to walk, just something to get people moving,” Rogers said. “It was really created as a community fun event.”

Rogers said the Multi-K is meant to be for all ages and abilities.

“Get your friends, get your family, a lot of families do it year after year together, it’s kind of like a reunion for some of our families. It’s just really about getting the community together, having a little goal, having some fun.”

She added the event is supposed to be fun but there are some serious participants, especially in the longer 21.1K segment.

The event is popular for people in Melfort and the area, but Rogers said they’ve already had registrants from as far away as Calgary.

Early registrants pay $40 until July 1, after which the race costs $50.

Last year’s Multi-K saw 450 people take part.
