Friedt-Mohr, Cox brothers celebrate championship with Mustangs

The 2024 SJHL champion Melfort Mustangs roster has strong connections to the Prince Albert area.

First is Chase Friedt-Mohr, named MVP of the SJHL Playoffs after the Mustangs knocked off the Flin Flon Bombers Tuesday to claim the league title.

“We had a very special group right from the start this year…very glad we were able to get it done,” said Friedt-Mohr, who finished his Junior A career as a champion. “It’s (the MVP award) something I think I’ll cherish a little bit more later in the summer. Right now I’m kind of just enjoying winning the SJHL as a team and looking forward to nationals here in Oakville.”

The 20-year-old defenceman said it was nice to play closer to home this season after spending the last two years south of the border in Tri-City.

“It’s special for them (my family) to not only come and watch but to watch us win a championship,” he said. “Friends, family, all of that were able to come here (Tuesday) night and celebrate the win.”

Meanwhile, brothers Logan and Danton Cox also celebrated the win with family and friends from their hometown of P.A.

“It’s pretty sweet…Danton is a great person, great player, and great teammate,” said Logan Cox, the older of the two brothers. “And to do it with him, with our teammates, and with our family being here, it’s pretty special for everyone involved.”

“It’s nice that we’re so close to home, and a lot more people can come that usually don’t at this time of year. The support that we get from our family, our friends, and then our fans too…it helps us out a lot,” Logan Cox continued.

Danton added that it was special to have their mom in attendance.

“My mom kind of had a stint in the hospital the last few months or so, so she was finally able to come out to some playoff games right at the end here. So it was really great that we were nice and close to home so she could come and watch us,” he said, adding that it was also remarkable to win with his brother.

“It’s pretty cool…I’m glad I stayed with him for one more year because this wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t. I’m so happy we get to share that together and my whole family was involved as well, so couldn’t ask for anything better,” said Danton.

The Mustangs will now represent the SJHL at this year’s national championship. The 2024 Centennial Cup begins May 9 in Oakville, Ont.

“It’ll be best on best competition, so we’re really happy to see where we rank out there,” said Danton. “We’re hoping and we’ll be working to try and come out on top.”
