It was a trip to remember for members of the Piwapan Wellness Centre’s Iskwesis (Girls) and Napesis (Boys) Clubs.

A group of 32 participants and 12 chaperones left La Ronge on Friday at 5 p.m. for a weekend of fun in Saskatoon. They spent the night in Prince Albert before arriving at Pop Con YXE in Saskatoon on Saturday around noon.

The event, held May 3 and 4, brings guests from TV shows and movies, talented artists and creators, and exhibitors selling their original works.

“It was a blast. The kids had a wonderful time,” said Piwapan youth worker Jesse Hepworth.

“There were many, many big strides from a lot of our kids breaking out of their shells and finding their interest in the diverse culture of the comic con. It was very beautiful to watch kids smile and their faces light up when they saw something they never seen before.”

Following the event, the group spent time at Apex Adventure Plex, which includes a trampoline park, bubble soccer arena and rock climbing.

Hepworth explained it was a 50/50 split between the kids who enjoyed the Pop Con YXE event and those would liked Apex Adventure Plex.

After the outing, the group spent the night in Saskatoon before returning to La Ronge on Sunday. Participants and chaperones of the trip had their travel, accommodations and meals all paid for by Piwapan.

Hepworth noted the Iskwesis and Napesis Clubs are meant to inspire local youth.

“Our main goal is to empower our youth and educate our youth on things they will inevitably run into on their journey through life,” he said.

“Also, to inspire them to set and reach their goals and make a positive impact on the world that we live in.”
