17th Avenue lighted crosswalk gets the green light

The City of North Battleford is moving ahead with plans to install a lighted crosswalk at 17 Avenue on 100 Street in North Battleford.

Council agreed to hire Regina firm Iles Electric Ltd. for the work, which had the lowest of three bids received.

The city was awarded $100,000 under the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund grant for the project. It budgeted $198,499 in total, with the remaining amount coming from the city’s gas tax funding.

The firm will also put in two extra poles to complete the activation buttons for the flashing lights. The work will see poles installed on all four corners for $184,605, including PST, coming in under budget.

“Pedestrians will be able to activate the flashing signal lights from each corner,” Director of Operations Stewart Schafer said in his report.

“We’ve been talking about this for a while and we’re really happy to finally have lights at that intersection, so people can cross safely,” Mayor David Gillan said.

He noted that students from North Battleford Comprehensive High School often travel across the busy intersection to pick up lunch at local restaurants, so it made sense to add a crosswalk there.

“There is so much movement across 100 Street,” Gillan said. “There are so many lanes, it’s very dangerous. This is very important.”

The work is expected to finish in August or early in the fall.
