Three students from the Battlefords are being recognized with 2024 scholarships presented by the Battlefords and District Community Foundation (BDCF).

John Paul II Collegiate’s Marielle Bala, Olesja Fa, and Lou Christian Bongosia have been named the recipients of this year’s award from the Peter Lewochko Fund, which provides annual scholarships to students pursuing post-secondary education in agriculture, education or engineering.

Lewochko’s profession was farming, and he established the scholarship in 2013 as a legacy to his belief in the value of education. All three of this year’s recipients are graduating seniors from JPII.

Bala will be attending the University of Saskatchewan in the Bachelor of Education secondary program and plans to teach math and physics at the high school level.

Fa will also be attending the University of Saskatchewan in the Bachelor of Science in Engineering program and is looking at environmental or mechanical engineering for her future.

Bongosia will be attending the University of Alberta for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He intends to focus on the manufacturing industry.

The three will split the $7,500 in scholarship funds allocated for this year’s winners.

Executive Director with BDCF, Kathy McNinch said all three of this year’s recipients were very well-deserving candidates.

“We had a good group of applicants this year and the three winners are quite outstanding in their school marks and the other things they do in the community, and they’re quite excited about going to their post-secondary education,” she said.

The Battlefords and District Community Foundation (BDCF) currently manages more than 30 funds that contribute to a range of interests from the arts and health care to post-secondary scholarships and recreation. They will distribute more than $60,000 in annual community grants and scholarships this year.

More information on the BDCF can be found at their website.
