“Ready to Ride”: Provincial Bike Safety Week is upon us

May 14, 2024 | 5:00 PM

Provincial Bike Safety Week is rolling.

This year’s theme is “Ready to Ride”, and Wayne Therres of Maverick Medical Consulting is working with the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute to promote bicycle safety.

Therres told northeastNOW that cycling remains the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations for children.

“Bike Safety Week is an opportunity to provide education for everyone and to promote safe cycling practices,” Therres explained.

Having the proper helmet with a proper fit can help prevent serious brain injury or death. That is the case for bikes, scooters, and all the way up to motorcycles.

“We want to follow that “2V1” rule where you’ve got two fingers above your eyebrows, the V by your ear, and one finger underneath that chinstrap.”

Therres said a bicycle on the road is like any other vehicle, so the cyclist must be aware of the rules of the road to stay safe, and motorists need to be aware of cyclists as well.

The recent popularity of E-bikes and E-scooters leads to more safety challenges, as they can attain speeds that regular bikes and scooters cannot. Therres said people operating these machines also need to obey the rules of the road.

“You want to watch for parked cars in the picture, car doors opening,” said Therres.

He said the earlier children learn the rules, the better off they will be in the long run.

“The earlier we start with the rules, making sure everybody does them the right way…the safer everybody is, and then everybody has a great summer of cycling.”

Provincial Bike Safety Week runs through May 18.
