The power forward from Alberta; Hayden Prosofsky Player Profile

The Melfort Mustangs are 2024 SJHL Champions, which means their nine 20-year-old players have gone out in style.

While they have all turned their attention to the Centennial Cup, their final career SJHL game is one to remember.

For Hayden Prosofsky, it’s been a season plagued by injuries but he’s refused to let that get him down and affect his performance when he’s in the lineup, as he’s recorded 22 points in a combined 42 games.

“It hasn’t exactly set in that we’re champions yet, it’s still pretty surreal, and the couple of days after definitely went by pretty quick,” he told northeastNOW.

“We played the game to get to this Centennial Cup though, that was the goal at the start of the year, so it feels really good to be here and we want to win. It just feels really good to see something through for the entire year.”

Prosofsky arrived in Melfort roughly a week before the start of the regular season, after spending parts of four seasons in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

An Alberta product himself, hailing from Medicine Hat, he never had ‘playing in the SJHL’ on his junior hockey bingo card, but now he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“If you had asked me when I was 16 years old playing junior hockey, if I’d ever end up in the SJHL, I would have told you no chance. Funny how the world works though because I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Best year of hockey I’ve ever had and I wouldn’t trade it in for the world,” added Prosofsky.

“Melfort is awesome, it’s probably the most welcoming place I’ve ever played, the people are super nice, they’re a great fan base, and there are just a lot of good things here that made my last year worth it and really fun.”

In 180 games of Junior A hockey action, the 2003-born power forward registered a combined 84 points, with 187 penalty minutes.

Whether it was grinding it out in the corners, battling for every inch no matter the wear and tear, pulling out a sick move out of thin air, or just being the most lovable guy in the dressing room, the ‘Kramer’ of the group could do it all.

Prosofsky is very grateful to be a part of this year’s Mustangs group, alongside his fellow 20-year-old teammates in Aidyn Hutchinson, Clay Sleeva, Leith Olafson, Chase Friedt-Mohr, Nolan Henderson, Logan Cox, Ryan Duguay, and Tye Evans.

“It’s a little sad to say that I’ve played my last game in a regular Junior A match. Obviously, it’s some of the best years of your life but you can’t ask for more than going to a Centennial Cup, so I’m pretty happy and obviously want to end with a win,” he explained.

“The 20s we have on this hockey club are second to none, every guy is great in the room and has a great work ethic on the ice. You never had to worry about anything outside of hockey, so I couldn’t have asked for a better group of guys, and I think as far as the entire team was concerned, the results showed exactly what and who we had this year.”

Following the conclusion of this week in Oakville, Prosofsky will continue his hockey career closer to home, as he has already committed to SAIT in Calgary.
