High school students will pay more for bus passes

May 15, 2024 | 3:00 PM

High school students in Prince Albert will no longer be able to buy bus passes after city council voted to end its current deals with the Saskatchewan Rivers and Prince Albert Catholic School Divisions.

Previously, agreements allowed for passes to be bought as cheaply as $20 but that will change starting in September.

Instead, the transit department will try to sign bus pass vendor deals with both divisions which would see the school division buy passes for $49.50.

After that, the division can decide to sell them at a further discount or not.

Families that fall under the Ministry of Social Services (SES, SIS, SAID or SEI) will be able to buy passes at City Hall for $25.

A ticket for one ride will cost $3, a price that is set across the board except for children aged 10 and younger who will be able to ride for free as long as they are with a paying paying.

Children between 10 and 14 will be able to get monthly passes for $40.

Prince Albert’s transit system has seen very large increase in usage in the last several years while at the same time, hours of operation have been expanded to evenings as well as runs out to Little Red River park.

The system runs at a deficit however, with every ride actually costing about $5 but users paying $3 for a single ride.
