LLRIB offers $250 security camera rebate for on-reserve members

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band has launched a security camera rebate program.

“There has been a lot of crime everywhere,” said Coun. Ann Ratt.

“We held two community meetings and, at both of the community meetings, there were lots of comments from the community members regarding the crime and the safety. We figured as an internal council, we are trying to keep our community safe and the idea of cameras came up. Someone said Air Ronge has cameras and why can’t we have cameras, so we just took the information gathered and that was one of the major concerns was the cameras.”

The rebate, which will cover costs up to $250, is open to La Ronge on-reserve 156A and B band members only. The rebate is effective as of May 13 and will continue until the funds allotted for the program are spent.

The program will be offered first come, first serve, and those who want a rebate must submit receipts.

“There is also going to be a form attached that says if there is a crime in the area, can the RCMP utilize your footage,” Ratt added.

“They have to sign a form that says yes. If they don’t sign it and do not allow RCMP to use the footage, then we won’t give the subsidy.”

While the program is only available to on-reserve band members at the moment, it could be opened to off-reserve members if the band is successful in applying for grants. Ratt noted the rebate is a step forward when it comes to making band members in the community feel safe.

Air Ronge still has its rebate program in effect for residents who want to install a home security camera on their property. The camera rebate is one-third the cost of the purchase price of any outdoor home security camera or system to a maximum rebate of $100.
