Wrapping up the season

Mustangs return from Oakville to heartfelt welcome home from Melfort faithful

May 21, 2024 | 4:04 PM

Update: The barbecue will no longer be held in the parking lot of the Northern Lights Palace. It will instead be held at the Melfort Fire Hall. It is still scheduled for 5 p.m.

The Melfort Mustangs are now back from Oakville, Ontario, the site of this year’s Centennial Cup, with a silver medal around their necks.

While in the moment, it may not be the result they wanted, as they fell 1-0 to the Collingwood Blues in the National Final, it was still an emotional and heartwarming moment to step off the bus Monday afternoon and receive a robust amount of cheers.

A nice moment for a tired group of players was the first of a handful scheduled for this week, as an SJHL Championship Parade and barbecue is planned for late Wednesday afternoon, while a Champions Banquet will take place Friday evening.

The parade and barbecue will be free to attend tomorrow, with the parade beginning at 4 p.m. on Main Street, and the barbecue to follow at 5 p.m. in the Palace parking lot.

As for the banquet, it will come with a $15 fee for children 12 years and under, and a $30 charge for everyone else.

Cocktails start at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. on May 24, all of which will occur at the Kerry Vickar Centre.
