Spring clean-up week in Melfort

Residents in Melfort can take advantage of Spring Clean-up Week to get their yards in tip-top shape.

Director of Community Services Rob Lok told northeastNOW landfill fees are being waived for Melfort residents through May 25.

“You will be asked to produce a proof-of-residence when you get to the (landfill), that’s something like a utility bill or a driver’s license,” explained Lok.

Residents can bring their yard waste and household garbage to the landfill for free during that time. Items that will not be accepted include tires, demolition material, hazardous waste, appliances containing freon, and asbestos.

The landfill is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. during that time.

If you can’t make it to the landfill, there is an alternative. On your scheduled garbage day, you can put out your yard waste with your garbage at the front curb.

“That’s yard waste in clear plastic bags so we can see what’s in there,” said Lok. Small branches in bundles will also be carted away with your garbage.

Lok said Spring Clean-up Week is a great opportunity to get your yard clean with spring upon us.

“You can get on top of snipping those branches and cleaning up last year’s vegetable garden, whatever it is you might need to clean up from your yard.”

The city’s compost site will also open for the season on Friday, May 24. The site at the west end of Central Street is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Monday.
