Deadline set to purchase veterans banners in Melfort

The Veterans Banner Program in Melfort has had a deadline extension to May 30.

Residents can still purchase a banner to hang along Veterans Way, also known as Saskatchewan Drive.

Peggy George with Communities in Bloom (CiB) told northeastNOW they began the program three years ago.

“If you have a veteran in your family or someone that you want to honour by buying a banner, the cost is $225,” explained George. She said the city puts up the banners for three years and once that time is up, the banners are returned to the families.

“It’s a lasting keepsake as well as a tribute.”

George said the banners made a tremendous difference on Saskatchewan Drive, and changing the name of the road to Veterans Way was a way to pay respects to what veterans have done for the Melfort area, and what they have sacrificed. She added paying those respects are important to do year-round, not just on Remembrance Day.

“It’s something we keep in our minds all year long,” said George.

When the program began three years ago, CiB was unsure how long the banners would last before showing wear and tear. George said that’s why they chose to change the banners in three-year intervals.

“By having something worn and weathered and faded does not do anybody any justice or honour that we intend to give to our veterans,” George said.

She added CiB is amazed at how well the banners held up, despite the harsh weather conditions. Of the 70 banners, only one had a slight tear. The families that received the banners contacted George to tell her they were impressed with them.

They currently have 80 banners sold, and some on the waitlist have not responded.

You can contact Communities in Bloom through their Facebook page or contact George to purchase a banner for your loved one.
