The Town of Nipawin is in the early stages of developing an Official Community Plan.

The town budgeted $80,000 for the new plan to begin this year, and council approved entering into a service agreement discussion with Wallace Insights Ltd./Crosby Hanna and Associates.

General Manager of Community Services Derek Seckinger told northeastNOW the plan is in its very early stages.

“We’re going to build off of the Twin Lakes District plan and build one that’s specific to the Town of Nipawin regarding development in the future for the next 20 to 25 years,” Seckinger explained.

He said the Official Community Plan is a guiding document aligning strategic goals with the development goals and planning that ultimately makes future decisions.

Council also passed a motion to approve the selection of Catterall & Wright as the engineering firm for the Evergreen Drive Sewer Loop and the south corridor sewer trunk line projects.

“They were chosen based on their extensive municipal experience and the best affordable rate for the services provided,” Seckinger said.

He said the Evergreen Drive project will provide sewer and water services to the lots not serviced on a section of Evergreen Drive.

The trunk line project in the south part of Nipawin was deemed necessary as the current sewer line is at capacity.

“To be able to develop any land in that south corridor and provide proper services, sewer and water, we have to have a trunk line that runs to the south corridor to be able to utilize the land,” explained Seckinger.

He said that it is Phase 1 of a multi-phase project that will likely take place as part of the Official Community Plan.
