Man involved in Shellbrook area murder case, receives life sentence

May 30, 2024 | 4:00 PM

One of multiple men involved in the death of Wesley Custer has received a life sentence and won’t be eligible for parole for 16 years.

Tyson Lachance appeared Thursday morning at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert and a guilty plea was entered to a charge of second-degree murder.

Due to the fact another co-accused is awaiting a jury trial, all the evidence discussed during the sentencing hearing is protected by a publication ban.

Wesley Custer was 20 years old when he was dropped off at the Shellbrook Hospital on Aug. 21, 2020, with serious injuries. He died shortly after.

Police have not divulged what the motive may have been for Custer’s death, but the family previously disclosed their belief it was gang-related.

Thursday’s sentence represented a joint submission from Crown and the Defence. The minimum parole eligibility for a conviction of this nature is 10 years.

In addition to his prison sentence sentence, Lachance is prohibited for life from owning or possessing any firearms or explosives.

Evan Ledoux, who is facing a charge of first-degree murder, will have his matters discussed on Friday during a pre-trial hearing hearing. No trial dates have been set as of yet.

Another co-accused, Kyle Standing previously entered a guilty plea to manslaughter and received a seven-year prison sentence.

Curtis Ledoux was convicted on a charge of being an accessory after the fact to manslaughter and received a sentence of 253 days.

Brian Dreaver and Matthew Whitstone were also charged with murder in the case and had their matters stayed at provincial court.
