Prince Albert’s own Gabe Klassen is heading to the pros.

The longtime Portland Winterhawks forward put pen to paper on Monday, signing a two-year deal with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the affiliate for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Klassen spent his entire five-year WHL career with Portland and served as captain of the club for the last two seasons.

This past season, he led the Winterhawks in scoring with 106 points in 67 games en route to a U.S Division title and in the postseason, he tacked on 16 points in 18 games. Over his five-year career, he scored 296 points in 286 combined regular season and playoff contests and his 265 regular season points rank 18th all-time in Winterhawks history. He was originally drafted 19th overall in 2018.

Last season, the Penguins finished ninth overall in the AHL with a 39-24-8-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record and were eliminated in the first round of this past season’s playoffs.
