Melfort’s Lambert hired as assistant coach for Toronto Maple Leafs

A Melfort hockey coach is heading to The Six for his next gig in the NHL.

On Wednesday morning, it was announced that Lane Lambert was hired as the assistant coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He will be replacing Dean Chynoweth, who the club said will not be returning after three years on the bench.

The 59-year-old Lambert joins the Leafs after serving as the head coach of the New York Islanders for the last two seasons before being relieved of his duties midway through this past season. While the head coach, he accumulated a 61-46-20 (W-L-OTL) record.

Before head coaching in New York, he spent four seasons as the Islanders assistant coach from 2018-19 to 2021-22. Prior to landing in Long Island, Lambert also spent four seasons with the Washington Capitals and three with the Nashville Predators. He won a Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018.

In addition to NHL experience, Lambert was also behind the bench in the AHL spending six seasons as the head coach of the Milwaukee Admirals while also serving as an assistant coach with the Admirals for one season. Additionally, he was also an assistant coach for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for one season.

Before the pros, Lambert got started coaching in the WHL as an assistant with the Moose Jaw Warriors where he spent two seasons, before moving west and becoming head coach of the Prince George Cougars where he also spent two seasons.

In his playing days, Lambert was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round, 25th overall of the 1983 NHL Draft and spent six seasons in the NHL with Detroit, the Quebec Nordiques and the New York Rangers before playing in Europe and the International Hockey League (IHL). He played junior hockey for the SJHL’s Swift Current Broncos and the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades.

Lambert joins the club’s newly appointed head coach, Craig Berube who was hired last month.
