SaskTel installs new 5G monopole tower in La Ronge

Jun 11, 2024 | 3:00 PM

A new tower erected in La Ronge last week will boost 5G capacity in the area.

That’s according to an email to larongeNOW from SaskTel, which states they are replacing an existing tower structure with a 33-metre-tall monopole tower.

The new tower is required as the existing structure cannot support the added weight from the equipment needed to deliver 5G service. The new tower is also taller, which will allow SaskTel to deliver improved coverage to the community.

Barring unforeseen challenges, SaskTel expects the new cell site to be in-service by the end of June.

During a federal announcement in La Ronge on June 3, it was revealed the federal government is investing $160 million in Saskatchewan to connect 13,700 homes to high-speed Internet, as well as provide cellular service along 500 kilometers of roads.

Up to $105 million of the funding is being allocated to SaskTel for projects that will benefit up to 5,700 households in communities across West Central and Northern Saskatchewan, the majority of which are Indigenous.
