The Nipawin Hawks held their annual general meeting (AGM) Tuesday at the Centennial Arena with a small crowd on hand to close the books on the 2023 fiscal year.

The financial report showed the team made $44,000 in 2023. The profit was assisted by the team returning to the postseason during the 2022 – 23 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season. The organization’s finances for this past season are still being calculated, but re-elected president Shayne Pickering said the team is still in solid shape financially.

“We’re in a pretty good position,” he said after the meeting. “Missing the playoffs hurt us a little bit, but overall, we’re looking forward to next year and things are going to keep rolling.”

Highlighting some of the major revenue factors for the organization going into it’s 40th season is the farming venture, the team’s annual fishing derby, and the New Year’s Raffle that awards over $40,000 in prize money each January.

Head Coach and General Manager will go into his third full year behind the bench, despite the team missing the playoffs last year, the board supports Kozun and his staff going into the next campaign.

“We have full trust in Tad with what he’s doing with the team, he has a lot of great recruits coming in, his draft went very well. We’re looking forward to the fall already,” Pickering added.

The executive had three members of the community added (Kali Burton, Mack Clark, Colby Peifer), and Tom Barrie will stay on for another term. The group re-elected Pickering as president, his second year in the role.

The group will now continue planning the anniversary season with plenty of events planned to celebrate four decades of junior Hawks hockey in the town.

“It’s huge, I am really looking forward our alumni weekend we have planned. We will see a lot of old faces, and new ones with the young team we have coming in. There is just a lot to look forward to,” Pickering concluded.

Kozun made a small presentation to the crowd regarding his thoughts for the upcoming year, Tim Verklan recapped the SJHL’s AGM that he attended, Terry Slusar updated the attendees on the agriculture fundraiser as well.

The SJHL regular season will open Sept. 20.
