Prince Albert Security Services: Cultivating future industry leaders amidst diverse workforce and training

Prince Albert Security Services is more than a locally owned security company, it’s become a training ground for the industry’s future professionals.

The business has been operating since 2020, and currently employs over 120 staff. Owner Roger Reimer acknowledged they have a very diverse staff, who represent a number of different nationalities.

“And they come with their own skills which is really unique and sometimes our clients are those nationalities and they feel comfortable working their own type of nationality too and we try our best to try and promote that for them,” he said.

Reimer acknowledged that in the past it’s typically been very hard to recruit women, but added the women they’ve hired and trained have thrived and gone on to become police officers or work in corrections.

“In the end it’s sad to see them leave, but you feel petty proud for them.”

Reflecting back on his own reasons for starting up a security company, Reimer explained he once thought about being a police officer, but decided one day it wasn’t for him and was drawn to the fact that security is a much needed profession.

In addition to the mandatory 40 hour security guard course, Reimer has also completed a number of advanced training programs including use of force and he has also done some work at the Saskatoon police service mini-course and learned report writing, and property assessments

With respect to job description, Reimer said the job of the security officer has changed a lot in the past 10 years, namely due to challenges surrounding mental health, addictions and homelessness

“When there’s more challenges it just means there’s more training and as long as you have the training, the challenges are actually a lot easier,” he said.

Noting their staff do respond to weapons complaints such as people with bear spray, and even organized crime and gangs, Reimer explained they are fortunate to have a good group of managers and a good core staff.

“That’s basically how we run our entire business so that we can teach our staff all the time about any issues that are occurring and just making sure that they’re safe,” he said, adding when dealing with those high risk individuals, a lot of it is talking to people and giving them space to avoid allowing them into your bubble.

He also acknowledged there are times when you just can’t and you know that’s when police get involved.

“I wanna say 90 per cent of the time, you can pretty much talk someone down into cooperating with you and sometimes even having the weapon turned over to you because you are educating them also on what’s gonna happen to them if they go further with what they are planning on doing,” he said. “Nobody ever really wants to harm you, it’s more of an intimidation factor.”

Reimer knows there are other security companies businesses can hire, but he encourages businesses to do their research and make sure they are getting the best bang for their buck.

He also noted the great relationship his company has with local police, which he attributed to their credibility that has comes from the endless training.
