Pride Walk held in Melfort after weather delay

Jun 27, 2024 | 5:00 PM

A delayed walk didn’t dampen spirits as Melfort Youth Evolution’s Pride Walk took place on Wednesday.

The walk was originally slated for Sunday but was postponed due to the weather warnings.

Participants walked from the North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) office buildings south on Main St. to Saskatchewan Dr., then east to Cindy’s Independent Grocer.

Mikayla Kaminski once again participated in the walk, after first organizing the event in 2021.

The inaugural walk saw a handful of people walking, with last year’s event increasing to 50 to 75 walkers.

Kaminski told northeastNOW while there were fewer walkers this year than last, those that participated had a good time.

“There were (fewer) people but it was still the same support we were expecting,” Kaminski said. “We definitely had new people, new faces show up, which was nice to see.”

Kaminski said being visible in the community and letting LGBTQIA2S+ people know that they are supported.

She added a walk will take place again next year.
