Plenty of Canada Day activities in La Ronge

Jun 28, 2024 | 12:00 PM

There will be plenty of activities for residents of the tri-communities on Canada Day.

The day will begin with a free pancake breakfast at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre between 8 a.m. and 10:30 p.m., followed by a Canada Day Parade organized by the La Ronge Regional Fire Department.

The parade will start at the Lac La Ronge Indian Band office, proceed along La Ronge Avenue and end at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. Thanks to a donation from local businessman Sonny Montilla, there will be gift cards for best decorated floats with $200 for first and $100 for second.

The La Ronge Family Festival will begin at La Ronge’s Patterson Park at 11:30 a.m. with the singing of O Canada. Festival organizer Viviana Ruiz Arcand explained it was traditionally known at the La Ronge Children’s Festival, but this year they decided to branch out to appeal to a larger demographic.

“It’s still hosted by the La Ronge Children’s Festival Inc., but we are calling it a family festival as we want to appeal to all ages, not just children,” she said. “Basically, the day is going to include a multitude of activities.”

Throughout the day, there will be several activities in Patterson Park including the Bighetty Puppet Show and performances by Chance Gonzalez Magic. There will also be performances by the La Ronge Powwow Dance Group, Ishraq Dance Troupe and Filipino traditional dancers.

The fire department will host a 25-foot slip-and-slide. There will also be food trucks, an emergency vehicle display, balloon twister and face painting. Ruiz Arcand noted there could also be a few other surprises.

“It is open to the tri-community and surrounding communities as well, so it is a great day to see people, meet people, talk to people and just engage in something fun and healthy in a really positive way,” she said.

Canada Day will end with a fireworks display at the beach at Patterson Park. It’s being sponsored by the Town of La Ronge, Village of Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. Fireworks are expected to begin at 10:45 p.m.
