Provincial Softball Championships start this weekend.

Prince Albert is playing host to the U13 and U11 Open Boys tournaments at Max Power Ball Park, but there are several others participating throughout the Saskatchewan.

The U17 Astros are in Saskatoon. On the girls side, the U11 A Aces are in Saskatoon while the U11 B Aces are in Meadow Lake and the U13 C Aces are in Delisle

Prince Albert Minor Softball Association (PAMSA) executive assistant Stephanie Ripplinger said ages U13 and up are competing for the chance to attend Westerns in Manitoba or the Nationals in Quebec.

“They are very strong teams. It would be amazing for Prince Albert to be represented in those different championships. Prince Albert has definitely been on the map for years with softball…I mean we’re bringing the world to P.A. next week. So, its an exciting time for softball and hopefully people go out and enjoy some of the games this weekend,” she said.

Ripplinger has been a part of the softball community in the city for almost 17 years. During that time, she said it’s been awesome to see the sport grow and watch athletes reach higher levels.

“There’s only a small window to play in Prince Albert as far as the spring and summer months, but to see these athletes, these kids, continue their passion in the sport is awesome. I’ve seen kids from being 4 years old and now playing in the United States, representing Team Canada…you literally get chills knowing they started here and they’re moving to where their dreams wanted them to go,” Ripplinger said.

She noted the U11 A Aces coached by Amy Fiddler entered provincials Friday afternoon undefeated. They were scheduled to play the Saskatoon Raiders Rush in round robin action around 2:30 p.m Friday. The Prince Albert Aces U11 B team lost their first game against the Biggar Nationals 11-5.
