No Kids Left Hungry

Melfort, Tisdale Salvation Army feeding children throughout the summer

The Salvation Army in Melfort and Tisdale is working hard to try and ensure that no kids go hungry this summer.

The local non-profit organization launched their ‘Lunch Bags for Children’ program yesterday in Melfort.

Every Tuesday from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m., kids can pick up a free bagged lunch at the Library.

Meanwhile, in Tisdale, lunches will be given out every Wednesday from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. at Memorial Park.

“We know that a lot of schools provide their kids lunches throughout the year, but now that it’s the summer, we wondered about those kids and where they were gonna get their lunches. We know the Marguerite Riel Centre and the food banks give out food, so we wanted to do it on days that weren’t already covered,” explained auxiliary captain Glenna Cryderman.

“Our one in Melfort yesterday was really well received, we handed out 50 lunches.”

Cryderman said that they got the idea to do this from the Salvation Army in Saskatoon which runs a similar program.

In the bagged lunches were a sandwich, fruit, vegetables, a snack (which Tuesday was a granola bar) and a drink.

SaskTel Pioneers have partnered with the Salvation Army, along with the Co-op in Tisdale, the A & W in Tisdale, the Save on Foods, and the food banks and Marguerite Riel Centre.

Cryderman told northeastNOW that all the partnerships are valued and needed, as they’re always looking for more, especially these days.

“At the food bank in Tisdale, we are close to doubling what we gave out the past few years. It’s hard to keep groceries on our shelves. We believe in partnerships and we can’t do it ourselves.”

The lunch program will run until August 20th and 21st. As long as they receive enough funding, they plan to do this again next year.
