Officers with the Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) managed to contain a man wielding a large knife and acting erratically early Monday on one of city’s busiest streets.

PAPS officers were called to the high-risk situation at about 2 a.m. on July 15 and found the armed man in the 700-block of 15th Avenue East.

“The incident presented significant challenges for the responding officers,” said PAPS in a media release.

“Initial attempts to resolve the situation through verbal de-escalation were unsuccessful, as the subject failed to comply with police instructions and continued to brandish the knife.”

Eventually, officers used a conducted energy weapon to gain control of the man who was then taken into custody with no one injured.

The 35-year-old subject appeared in Prince Albert Provincial Court on July 16, charged with assault on a police officer and carrying a weapon dangerous to the public.
